Pennsylvania Route 6
Take The High Road
Perhaps Route 66 opened the door for Tour operators and RV
Clubs and Caravans to realize that historic
roads are a tour in themselves. The itineraries are already designed and the
supporting tour entities are in place. The theme is in place, but the best part
is the Directors of the Scenic Byways, Trails or Routes are knowledgeable when
it comes to packaging and if they do not have the answer to a question, they
have the networking in place to find the answer.
Pennsylvania Scenic Route 6 is the road to explore by motorcoach, RV, family
automobile, motorcycle or bicycle. This area includes historic sites and towns,
cultural sites and activities and natural lands including the Allegheny National
Forest.
The section is divided into Pennsylvania’s Great Lakes, Pennsylvania Wilds,
Pennsylvania Northeast Mountains and the Pocono Mountains. Each of these regions
have their own treasures and combined they are the best Travel Chest of
experiences for the novice to the expert traveler. From the shores of Lake Erie,
thru Meadville home of Allegheny College to Bradford, home of Zippo Lighters and
adjacent Allegheny National Forest, thru Coudersport, home of Elliot Ness who
wrote the “Untouchables”, Pa Grand Canyon and onto to Wellsboro with tree lined
streets and Gaslights of the an earlier time. One continues on to experience the
“Endless Mountains” and the overlook at Wyalusing.
Don’t miss the towns of Tunkhannock and Wyalusing with a stop at the French
Azilum, LaPorte House thru the scenic trails. Continue on to Scranton and on to
the famous Pocono Mountains and recreation.
Theme Development is easy along Route 6. One of my favorites is the historic
Diner Tour. This is a must for the Maitland Motorhome vacation in the future
according to James Maitland, the driver who grew up in Bradford, PA. He has
memories of being a regular with his Dad at the Congress Street Diner in
Bradford, PA. It still exists today as Grandma’s House, Tea and Gifts. The
booths are in place with the menus under glass.
I can just taste those old greasy French fries and the juicy hamburgers. It was
the place to go after the movies or teen club dance. Oh my the song “Where the
boys are” was appropriate. I wonder how many young romances that bloomed over 2
straws in a soda are celebrating golden anniversaries today.
The PA Route 6 Artisan Trail was part of the area I explored. Many gifted and
talented folks provide wonderful take home memories. The hands on experiences
are there as well. Sampling food, cooking classes, wine tasting, regional
specialties creates a tour in itself. Don’t forget to include Patsel’s in
Glenburn, PA in your travels. This is truly a feast for all the senses. There
are so many great restaurants to explore along Route 6.
Think you could spend more than a week on PA Route 6 because there is something
there for anybody’s lifestyle and age. Contact Terri Dennison, Executive
Director at 1-877-PAROUTE6 or www.paroute6.com. All of the agencies will be
